THE NME AWARDS TOUR 2012. FOUR AMAZING BANDS. SOLD OUT SHOW. VALENTINES DAY.
Rising Hip Hop star Azealia Banks opened, 2011 was big for Azealia – with her hit single ‘212’, as well as topping NME’s cool list and finishing 3rd in BBC’s Sound Of 2012 poll, I think it is safe to say that 2012 is going to be her year.
She was followed by personal favourites of mine – Tribes, recently releasing their debut album ‘Baby’ in January 2012 after gaining a large following in 2011 with the release of 2 Ep’s, this britpop/shoegaze inspired band are very reminiscent of Pavement and the Manics.
The penultimate band on the bill were long standing electro indie rockers Metronomy, for years Metronomy have had a large underground and cult following, renowned throughout the right crowds for fantastic remixes of songs and a couple of great albums but it wasn’t until 3rd album ‘The English Riviera’ (2011) that they finally and deservedly reached larger audiences and achieved mainstream success.
Headlining the bill is a band that needed no introduction and the one seemingly everybody was waiting for – Two Door Cinema Club. They seeped into the limelight in 2009 and exploded in 2010 with a string of singles and an amazing debut album in the form of ‘Tourist History’. The anthemic electro indie trio (plus touring drummer) whipped the crowd into the biggest frenzy of the night and were a great band to end the bill.
