How you doing? Well Sea Girls want you to know that you’re guaranteed to have a crackin’ time at one of their shows! They’ve captured the hearts and attention of indie listeners since their first EP, and tonight is no different. The damage is done, please welcome…
SEA GIRLS
Aptly titled Daydreamers are a band who exude enjoyment in what they do and they clearly have a blast doing it. They’re confident performers, garnering the attention of the spotlight without an impressive lighting rig. We’ve got the classic vocalist geeing up the audience and bouncing around the stage; their drummer interlocking seamlessly throughout the noisy fluidity. With an epic pop plosivity to their sound, Daydreamers have a tendency towards big gestures and big hooks, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see them headlining our stage very soon.
It’s not just their music that makes Sea Girls such a big hit, their live shows play a monumental role in this popularity too. They’ve developed a dedicated fanbase of those who resonate with their music on a level we haven’t seen in our venue for a while. From the opening cluster of butterfly-shaped confetti, fluttering in synchronisation to the overwhelming swell of sound – it’s a sight to behold. Aligning with the album roll out, Midnight Butterflies is the first song of the night and although it’s a fairly new track, the audience are enraptured.
Flipping the anticipation on its head, their earliest and biggest hitmaker Call Me Out is situated fairly early in the set. There is something so euphoric about watching an act perform the song that everyone knows the words to – Sea Girls passed the baton to the crowd and stood in silent amazement in response to the audience’s inability to miss a beat.
“I LOVE YOU ALREADY – I WISH YOU COULD SEE ALL YOUR SHINING FACES – BUT I WANNA GET YOU ALL MOVING!”
Guitarist Rory is notorious for never standing still while he performs, and he lived up to this reputation once again as he danced along with his bandmates. With the hard-hitting indie hubris of I Want You To Know Me oozing into the floorboards and metamorphosing into choral unity, the audience couldn’t help but mimic him. Frontman Henry made the stage his own as he climbed up onto the barrier on multiple occasions, the echoing wails of having Too Much Fun ringing in reverb. Meanwhile, hits such as Hometown and Sick seemed to deeply resonate with a room of twenty-somethings attempting to navigate their way in the world. With the crowd jumping as one, a sense of communal catharsis seemed to surge through the crowd in great, uncontrollable waves.
The band’s performance of Violet allowed for a visual and auditory spectacle, with violet covered beams of light submerging spectators into a dreamy blur. The crowd became a unified voice as they echoed the lyrics with unfaltering devotion. The encore saw the performance of All I Want to Hear You Say and Damage Done.
