An exclusive backstage chat with Landon Tewers left us with high expectations for the night, and The Plot In You did more than just deliver. They rampaged our stage with reverberating retribution and left us hungry for more. Please welcome to the stage…
THE PLOT IN YOU
Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees, and sometimes you can’t see the band for you’re rattling round the mosh pit with too much ease. As the only British band on the bill tonight, Acres is hammering home the headliner spot is theirs for the taking. Epiphanies of EDM break through the noise, urging us to part the sea and crash together with waves of sweat and enthusiasm in equal measures. We’re taken further with Invent Animate. Their screaming vocals and soaring basslines seem to take over our bodies as we’ve got a circle pit and a wall of death imminent. The plot only thickens as that interluding wait for our main act is contrastingly pop classics such as Since You’ve Been Gone.
Thick, heavy hues of red lighting staccato over the stage, pulsing like a heartbeat. A literal ba-dum-ba-dum is tangible in the sound system and then your own heart skips a beat as The Plot In You take to the stage. We’re greeted with a primal scream, the band falling in seconds later with viciously raw intent, warning us to Don’t Look Away. Our attention is at their mercy.
Two hours earlier, Landon Tewers had heralded the fans with equal attention. “We’re fortunate that our fans accept change. They’ve been cool with us experimenting over the years, so it doesn’t feel like we have to fit into a box.
“Doing this tour has been very telling – the UK is usually our worst market, and we were genuinely shocked it sold at all, never mind well! We’re so, so appreciative for the fans.”
We’re taking it as word: All That I Can Give manifests itself in an otherwise unattainable amount of crowd surfers. It seems the singing and moshing along wasn’t enough for us, and we had to sacrifice the same amount of vulnerability that the band give to us in their music. Quite possibly setting a record at the venue – despite having a no-crowd surfing rule – you can’t take a step without seeing two or three people being tossed up, high-fiving Tewers as they go. It’s cathartically cinematic.
“We wanna say a thank you to the security guards for looking after you all! They’re your friends, and you’re our friends – let’s treat each other with love!”
Taking a respite in the screamo-core aspect yet hardly dialing back on the passion, THE ONE YOU LOVED is arguably as ‘pop’ as the current top 40. The crowd’s reaction is a testament of their devotion to these Ohio lads; experimentation and evolution is a natural process for most progressive artists, and The Plot In You is no exception – although, this goes against the Paradigm, if you will. Whilst the number is characteristically heavy, Tewers is quick to point out: “It’s been many years since we’ve been in the UK, y’all used to hate us for some reason?
“Can you hear that sound? Does it sound familiar!?” Of course it does, how could we have Forgotten. Chanting in choral desperation, the crowd is now Tewers’ instrument. The song is beautifully marred with distortion, and blends artist and audience harmoniously as one; this relationship is furthered deeper when the band announce the next song is their personal favourite from the new roll out of EPs. Been Here Before reinforces Tewers’ backstage beliefs.
“I feel like you can make the argument that there’s just as many elements of pop as metalcore in our music.”
Prescribing a double dose of an encore, the audience is ablaze with
