If love was money, The Snuts would be millionaires! Their high-octane performance on Talbot Street’s favourite venue was more than sought after, if the sold-out status was anything to go by, and certainly one for the history books. Welcome…
THE SNUTS
Priding herself on her vulnerability for songwriting – to be so open when creatively writing and performing – is evident within Siobhan Winifred’s set. Our support act is warming up the crowd with songs from her debut EP released earlier this year, yet the highlight was undoubtedly an absolutely stellar cover of Arctic Monkeys’ 505. Emboldened by the raucous response from the audience, Winifred seamlessly incorporates a snippet of Sam Fender’s Getting Started within her original song Don’t Do Well Alone. A similarity to local lass Holly Humberstone could be deduced to those finetuned ears in the crowd. Nevertheless, if lyrical relatability is your niche, she‘s a definite one to watch out for in the near future.
Frontman Jack Cochrane walks onto stage in his signature sunglasses. More so a character themselves at this point than just a simple outfit accessory, their intricate familiarity stands as a motif for The Snuts. Nineties televisions and old-fashioned stereos line the stage along with a singular streetlight, maintaining the millennial aesthetic of normalcy. Drummer Jordan Mackay, affectionately nicknamed ‘Joko’, launches us headfirst into Millionaires. It seemed that the entire indie-rock community are out tonight in full force; The Snuts are the masters of call and response, and the crowd is more than happy to oblige, rapidly parting to form a mosh pit and descending into chaos.
Tracks such as Pigeons In New York and Deep Diving show two different sides of the band: we have the fun, infectious singalong anthems, and the brilliant funky guitar lines from Joe McGillveray and Callum Wilson. Flip a coin and the audience are happy either way with the choice of song!
“Show us a bit of love! Whoever you’re with tonight – give ‘em a good ‘ol hug along to this next one!”
Tonight’s lighting guy was absolutely making the most out of our iconic venue, the ongoing strobes enticing the crowd to grow louder and move bolder within the pit. All Your Friends, gritty Don’t Forget It (Punk) and Burn The Empire’s political undertones adds a dose of angst and fire to the audience. It’s a sentiment not lost on the band, with Cochrane declaring: “I’m generally quite a miserable bastard and it takes a lot to make me happy. This is a beautiful place and venue, you’re doing brilliant out there!”
Reimbursing the favour further, The Snuts perform Sing For Your Supper, a track which prior to this tour hadn’t been played live in five years. Much to the delight of pockets of fans in the crowd, this highlights the verocity of a band who have worked on their craft and live performance with relentless touring schedules behind them. Similarly, it seemed like Novastar had its own fan club as the opening notes began and a single scream came from the crowd; Jordan Mackay’s drumlines got right beneath our skin as we found ourselves singing along. Cochrane comments that “if you don’t know this song, unlucky!” before they kick into What’s Going On.
Coming back for a three-track encore, it does feel like the best has been saved for last as Circles started it off with full band unity and their twirling guitar riffs soundtracking the singalong. Final track Gloria gave a big Scottish goodbye to round off their first visit to Nottingham, and we’d say based on the smiles across faces and the cheer as they left the stage, it would be classed as a job well done by them.
